Nano Triptych

My vision as an artist of the ring structures created in the laboratory of Professor J Fraser Stoddart. These paintings interpret the prepositioning of organic molecules by having two of them stick to a metal atom. The remarkable thing about this is the ability of chemists to calculate the angles at which the molecules will be positioned so as to ensure the desired chemical reaction.

Of course, these molecules are far too small to be seen. There are ways of drawing diagrams of the structures as a visual aid to chemists. I have used those diagrams and a feeling for chemistry picked up many years ago when I studied Physics. Professor Stoddart wrote to me that the paintings have "captured the imagination of my whole research group and beyond".
